Use Directory servers in production! — that’s the conclusion
One of a recent client’s complaints was slow Contrbutor login (to application list, to nodes tree). After doing all the bandwidth\performance checks, I’ve writen a small script testing timing of planning02.asp loading and found out that the bottleneck was user authentification, taking up to 20 seconds.
They used lae and vbscripts to populate it. Scripts were poorly written so their lae grew up to 50 megabytes.
After installing SunOne and importing, logon time became subseconds. That was bad, because they decided to leave the scripts as is, since “it’s fast enough now, will see if there will be problems in future”.
offtopic:
One of the main things I do not like with proprietary software are copyright problems. I do not dare to post above mentioned script, because it uses cognos internal asp calls. And every time I have to think where copyright bound is. I’m a community-style person, so I’d rather accept “share&get” model.
But there are copyrights. For example there’s really a lot of intersecting transformer vbscript out there, performing same tasks, but none is open-sourced, so everyone builds it from ground-up every time.
I still get some copyright threats about the blog on wordpress, but hence they are not detailed and signed with cognos uk support emails with sweden ip’s, I just ignore them. But it troubles me anyway
